Bringing Bach to life – not just for Kids

Lynn Town Hall was the venue for Bach for Kids on Saturday, as Geoffrey Thomas (aka Bach) came to town. Combining funny tales with some of Bach’s finest works, Mr Thomas made Bach for Kids a truly enjoyable experience for adults and children alike.

Mr Thomas started off by bounding into the room in 1700s attire to a beautiful green and gold harpsichord, and raising the lid to reveal a glorious landscape painted underneath. He removed his jacket from inside and put it on, asking who didn’t believe he was Bach, in an American twang!

Perhaps it was this accent, or the fact that Bach died nearly 250 years ago that meant many people were not convinced. But this didn’t matter, as he led his audience through the life of Bach in a funny and charming manner, bringing him and the music to life.

He started by telling the audience about his own life, brought up in Oklahoma, and about his musical influences – from blues to Baroque to Bach – and how this related to Bach’s life.

While answering some of the questions on the programme – such as why would someone rather play Bach than be a rock star, why did Bach get into a knife fight, and what is a musical duel – he really started to sink into the role of Bach.

The town hall was the best venue for the concert, as it was warm and the way it was set out made the audience feel part of the performance.

It was good to see so many at the concert, but some were too young to really appreciate it.
Overall it was really enjoyable and we all learned lots about Bach and his music.
