Meaning in the Well-Tempered Clavier

Published by bgthomas

Below is my provisional attempt to assign a meaning or affect to each of the preludes and fugues in the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I by Johann Sebastian Bach. I believe every player must make these decisions and I would expect that any player who does would argue with my interpretations. What I do not believe is debatable is the necessity of making these kinds of decisions. You must decide what the music means. You may very well change your mind many times, but you must make some kind of decision. About that, there should be no argument.
